Who Are We?
We are an Alma Mater Society (AMS) club at Queen's University that seeks to educate the Queen’s community about Islamic values and philosophy as well as foster an open and tolerant environment in which dialogue and discussion are objective and free of prejudice. TMA is built around the teachings of the Thaqalayn, or the two weighty things: the Quran and the Ahlul-Bayt (Prophet Mohammad and his Household).
TMA’s overarching objectives:
TMA’s overarching objectives:
- Unity Through Diversity: This objective is inspired by a quote by Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib that says: “A person is either your brother in faith, or your equal in humanity”. We take this maxim to heart and, as a result, seek to create unity, acceptance, and tolerance within the Muslim circle and outside of it (ie. to non-Muslims). We also encourage open and objective dialogue within the university community in order to create understanding and tolerance.
- Developing Awareness: With awareness and knowledge comes understanding and acceptance. Thus, we hope to educate the Queen’s community, both Muslim or non-Muslim, about the teachings of Islam through dissemination of knowledge and creation and maintenance of open dialogue and discussion.
- Giving Back: The second objective is also inspired by a quote by Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib which states: “Generosity cultivates love”. We hope to create a more loving and compassionate community through various events aimed at giving (e.g. food, clothes & other necessities, a listening ear) to those in the community who are less fortunate.
- Student Services: Islam is a holistic religion which caters not only to religious and spiritual needs, but also to social, psychological, and health-based needs. Thus, we at TMA aim to provide services that foster a wholesome and enjoyable university experience for students in all years.
